Energy bills can get expensive during the winter time, but following these eight simple tips will help you reduce the cost:

1. Change your furnace filter. Many of us forget to do this as often as we should, but taking the time to complete this easy maintenance task can make a lot of difference in your heating bills, as well as in the efficiency and life span of your furnace.

2. Make sure your cold air returns aren’t blocked. In addition to this, make sure your high-low vents (if you have them) are in the correct orientation. In winter, cold air should be entering through the lower of the two vents, while the reverse is true in the summer.

3. Have your furnace professionally inspected. This should be done at least once a year, given that deferred maintenance is the most common cause of furnace issues. A cracked heat exchanger could also cause Co2 to leak into your home.

4. Run your ceiling fans backwards. Heat naturally rises, but you can counter this by setting your fans to run in reverse and pull cold air upward, instead.

Deferred maintenance is the most common cause of furnace issues.

5. Run a humidifier. Attaching to a humidifier will not only keep your skin from drying out, but it will also help your home feel warmer.

6. Invest in a smart thermostat or programmable thermostat. This will help regulate your home’s heat and keep your bills more consistent.

7. Clean out heating ducts. Having a professional clean your ducts will make your furnace run more efficiently and will also help prevent fires.

8. Order an energy audit. This is the most expensive tip, but will also likely save you the most money in the long run. Essentially, the process involves pressurizing your home in order to detect any air leaks around doors, windows, or ductwork.
