Burglary is a crime of opportunity. The easier you make it for people to burglarize your home, the higher the chances it will actually happen. If you want to minimize the chances of your house being burglarized, here are a few tips you need to follow.

First, keep your doors and windows locked and deadbolted—especially the door leading from the garage to the house. It’s easier for a thief to get into your garage than you think (Watch Here), and once they’re in there and shielded from public view, it’s simpler for them to break into your house.

Additionally, if you usually leave a car in your driveway overnight, make sure you lock it, and don’t leave a garage door opener inside it. Consider locking your cars even when they are in your garage. There’s been a rash of burglaries lately involving stealing garage door openers, so don’t let the same thing happen to you.

Next, consider investing in a security system. Home security systems have become very cost-effective over time. Even if you don’t pay for monitoring, the “Protected by X” yard signs and window stickers are a great deterrent to potential burglars.

Also, install adequate outdoor lighting. Motion sensor and dawn to dusk lights prevent a lot of crime from happening.

It’s easier for a thief to get into your garage than you think, and once they’re in there and shielded from public view, it’s simpler for them to break into your house.

Burglaries increase during the summertime here in our region due to more people going on vacation and the weather simply being nicer. If you’re going on vacation soon, there are a few extra things you can do to keep your home safe:

Following a couple of basic steps will ensure that your air conditioning unit continues to function properly.

Air conditioners are something most of us would never want to live without. However, many new homeowners have no idea what it takes to keep these units in good, working order. To make sure the A/C in your own home doesn’t “lose its cool” at the worst possible moment, there are two crucial maintenance tasks you must follow:

Like any major home system or appliance, your air conditioner requires proper care to function as it should.

1. Never run your A/C if the weather outside hasn’t been above 60 degrees Fahrenheit for at least 24 consecutive hours. Doing so could cause your compressor to seize up, and fixing such an issue doesn’t come cheap.

2. Change your air filter and get your unit professionally serviced regularly. Neglecting these regular maintenance tasks could reduce the lifespan of your A/C unit and make it run less efficiently over time.

Dryer fires are surprisingly common. Here’s something simple you can do to prevent them from happening.

Every year, somewhere around 15,000 house fires that occur are attributed to dryers. The largest cause of these malfunctions? Built up lint.

Dryers are full of lint, since it tends to build up in the system. If your clothes aren’t drying well or if you can smell something hot or burning, it’s time to get your dryer and exhaust ducts cleaned out.

To service our dryer at home, my family uses a local company from here in Madison called Dirty Ducts. A visit from them can cost between $75 and $150, and they’ll remove all the lint from your dryer ducts and vents.

If your clothes aren’t drying well or if you can smell something hot or burning, it’s time to get your dryer and ducts cleaned out.

Besides reducing the risk of dryer-fires, this will also improve your dryer’s performance by reducing the amount of time it actually takes to dry your clothes. As a result, it will save you some money, since you won’t be running it as often.
